Quite simple there are there are three ingredients-water, barley and yeast. Sugar is extracted out of the barley by letting it grow a little bit and then you mill it. Then you add water to it and drain the sugar out of it. You have the sugar liquid, which you add yeast to. This is similar to beer. Its starts to ferment and essentially you make beer. That beer is then placed in hand crafted copper pot stills. It is then cooked and distilled a number of times. Then you separate the alcohol and flavour from the water through a complex process. This is basically the row spirit, it has whisky flavours, but before it can be called whisky, it has to be mature for at least three years.
Most distillers then mature it for another extra nine years. So in many cases the youngest malt for many producers is 12 years old. The process may sound simple but it takes an awful long time to complete.
It takes a lot more effort, a lot more hand work and a lot more skills. This is why Malt Whisky is a lot more expensive than Blended Whisky. This is also why it is so unique.
Malt Whisky is made only from malted barley and Single Malt Whisky is a product which contains whisky from just one distillery, not vatted or blended with whisky made in other distillery.
